The Medina Valley Panthers defeated the Eagle Pass Eagles 22-20 Friday night in the season opener. The Panthers got off to a fast start by scoring on their 2nd offensive play of the season with QB Ethan Dowell throwing to HB Tristen Stivors for a 14 yd TD strike. Two possessions later the offense took over in great field position but was only able to come away with 3 points off of a 39 yard field goal by Ethan Hassinger to make the score 10-0 Panthers. The Eagles managed a 3 yard TD run in the 2nd Quarter to make the score 10-6 going into half time.
In the 2nd half the Panthers took advantage of an Eagles bad snap over the punter and took over in great field position. This time Dowell found receiver Anthony Siebold wide open in the end zone to give the Panthers a 16-6 lead and a missed X-Pt. The Eagles came right back and score on a 9 yd run after taking advantage of a mistake in the Panthers kicking game to make the score 16-13 and a missed X-Pt as well. Adrian Sustaita then came in on a critical 4th and short play and broke through the Eagle defense for a 17 yard TD instead! The try for 2 failed to make the score 22-13 in the 4th quarter. The Eagles would not go away as they quickly came back and scored on a 54 yard catch and run play that made the score 22-20. The Eagles had one more opportunity but the drive was ended when Andrew Hitzfelder intercepted an Eagle pass deep in our territory sealing the Panthers 22-20 victory.
The team is appreciative of all who made the 2 hour drive to Eagle Pass. The Panthers next take on the Boerne Greyhounds this Friday night in Boerne at 7:30 pm.
